General description

Furosemide belongs to a group of medicines called loop diuretics (also known as water medicines). Furosemide is used to treat fluid retention (edema) and swelling caused by congestive heart failure, liver disease, kidney disease or other medical conditions because of its anti-vasoconstrictor and diuretic effects.

Furosemide inhibits tubular reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the kidneys, thereby resulting in excessive excretion of water along with sodium, chloride, magnesium and calcium.
