General description

Chlorobutanol, or chlorbutol, is an alcohol-based preservative with no surfactant activity. It appears as a colourless to white crystalline compound with a camphoraceous odour and taste. It also elicits sedative-hypnotic and weak local anesthetic actions in addition to anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

As a detergent, chlorobutanol causes disorganization at the lipid layer of cell membranes, which leads to increased cell permeability and thus, cell lysis.
